Nathan Matthews Jr. is reelected mayor of Boston.
December 15, 1891
Matthews (D), with 34,708 votes, defeats Horace Allen, with 19,532, and others to be reelected to his second consecutive term as mayor by the largest majority up to that point in the city’s history. During his tenure as mayor, according to Constance Burns, Matthews complains that Boston is the most heavily taxed city in the nation, possibly “in the entire world.”
